The Afghan Spaniel is an intentional cross, not a kennel-club breed with a single written standard. Two dogs from the same pairing can differ in size, coat, and temperament, because each puppy inherits a different mix of traits from the contributing breeds.

The Afghan Spaniel mixes the Afghan Hound with the Cocker Spaniel. Size usually falls between the two: larger than a Cocker, not as tall as a show Afghan. Ears are long and coated; the body coat can be silky or slightly harsh.
The Cocker contribution often makes a more people-oriented dog than a pure Afghan Hound. Scent work and retrieving games suit many of these mixes. Ears need regular checks, and the coat needs brushing so the fine Afghan hair does not felt into the spaniel feathering.
