The American Hairless Terrier is a small, square, racy terrier. Hairless dogs have smooth, warm skin; coated dogs have a short, dense coat. Both types have erect or tipped ears and an alert expression.

A small, wash-and-go terrier who fits an apartment if given walks and play; no coat work, but still a busy, curious house dog.

The American Hairless Terrier was developed in Louisiana from Rat Terriers that produced hairless puppies. Breeders established both hairless and coated varieties so the type could be maintained. It is a true terrier: quick, curious, and used historically on vermin as well as a house companion.

Temperament

These dogs are lively, affectionate with their people, and often good travelers. They can be vocal and may chase small animals. Hairless dogs seek warmth and do not like long spells in cold or strong sun without protection.

Training

They learn quickly and get bored with repetition. Short, upbeat sessions and a secure yard are important; many will bolt after squirrels if the chance appears.

Care and grooming

Hairless skin needs bathing, moisturizer, and sunscreen outdoors. Coated dogs need only a quick weekly brush. Use a harness; this is a small terrier with a lively neck.

Shedding

None on Hairless dogs; low on the coated variety.

Health

The breed may be prone to skin irritation on Hairless dogs, patellar luxation, and dental crowding. Keep the skin clean and do not overexpose Hairless dogs to sun or cold.
