The Hokkaido Inu is a medium, sturdy spitz with small triangular ears, a curled tail, and a dense double coat. The outline is that of a primitive Japanese hunting dog, built for snow and rough ground.

The Hokkaido Inu, also called the Ainu-Ken, is a hunting dog from Hokkaido in northern Japan. It was kept by the Ainu people for bear and other game. The UKC classes it as a Northern Breed.

Temperament

These dogs are typically loyal to their household, reserved with strangers, and independent. They have a strong prey drive and need more work than a short walk. They are not a soft first-time companion breed.

Training

Be consistent and start socialization early. Harsh methods make this breed more stubborn.

Care and grooming

Brush weekly, and daily when the undercoat blows. They do poorly in prolonged heat without shade.

Shedding

Seasonal and heavy.

Health

The breed is generally hardy. Hip dysplasia can occur; keep the dog lean.
