The Hungarian Hound is a lean, rectangular scenthound with dropped ears and a short black-and-tan coat. There is a taller variety and a shorter-legged variety; both have a long tail and a keen expression.

A Transylvanian scent hound with a short coat and a distinctive hunt cry; country miles, not a closed-in city routine.

The Hungarian Hound, or Erdelyi Kopo (Transylvanian Hound), is a scenthound from the Carpathian basin. Hunters kept a taller dog for open country and a shorter dog for forest. The UKC classes it as a Scenthound.

Temperament

These hounds are typically hardy, independent, and determined on a scent. They have a carrying voice and need more running than a short walk. They are usually loyal to their hunter and reserved with strangers.

Training

Train the recall early and use a long line. Scent drive is strong.

Care and grooming

Wipe the short coat and clean the ears after work in cover.

Shedding

Low to moderate.

Health

The breed is generally hardy. Ear infections and pad injuries are the common working-dog issues.
