The Kishu is a medium Japanese hunting spitz with small triangular ears, a curled tail, and a short, dense coat that is usually white. The outline is that of a primitive hound, compact and clean.

The Kishu, or Kishu Ken, is a hunting dog from the Kishu region of Japan, used on boar and deer. The AKC lists the breed in FSS; the UKC classes it as a Northern Breed.

Color: White is preferred; red or sesame is also seen
Coat: Harsh outer coat with a soft, dense undercoat

Temperament

Kishu are typically quiet, loyal to their household, and reserved with strangers. They have a strong prey drive and need more work than a short walk. They are not a busy-street companion breed.

Training

Be consistent and start socialization early. They think for themselves in cover.

Care and grooming

Brush weekly, more often when the undercoat blows.

Shedding

Seasonal and moderate to heavy.

Health

The breed is generally hardy. Hip dysplasia and allergies can occur; keep the dog lean.
