The Otterhound is a large, shaggy scenthound with a dense, oily broken coat, a big nose, and webbed feet. The head is stately, the ears are long, and the voice is deep.

A large, shaggy scent hound for a house with land; serious coat work, a booming bay, and days measured in wet miles.

The Otterhound is an English pack hound created to hunt otter in cold rivers. The breed is rare and is no longer used for that hunt. The AKC places it in the Hound Group; the UKC classes it as a Scenthound.

Color: Any; commonly grizzle, wheaten, black and tan, or liver and tan

Temperament

Otterhounds are typically amiable, stubborn on a scent, and fond of water and mud. They have a booming voice and need more running than a short walk. They are not tidy apartment dogs.

Training

Train the recall early and use a long line. Scent and water will beat a weak recall.

Care and grooming

Brush the shaggy coat weekly so it does not mat. Expect wet dogs and wet floors.

Shedding

Moderate.

Health

Otterhounds may develop hip dysplasia, ear infections, and a bleeding disorder (glanzmann thrombasthenia) in some lines. Ask breeders about health testing.
