The Picardy Shepherd is a medium-to-large, rustic herding dog with a wiry, slightly windswept coat, erect to semi-erect ears, and a long tail. The outline is rectangular and the expression is alert without being sharp.

A shaggy French herder for a house and yard; coat work, a watchful bark, and a job-minded temperament.

The Picardy Shepherd, or Berger Picard, is a herding breed from Picardy in northern France. It worked sheep and cattle on the plains. The AKC lists the breed in FSS; the UKC classes it as a Herding Dog.

Color: Fawn, brindle, or gray brindle
Coat: Harsh, crisp, and medium length, with a modest beard and eyebrows

Temperament

Picards are typically loyal, watchful, and a little reserved with strangers. They need a job and can become noisy if they are left idle. They are usually devoted to their own household.

Training

Be consistent and start socialization early. They think for themselves on a farm.

Care and grooming

Brush the harsh coat weekly. It is not a high-maintenance show coat if it is kept rustic.

Moderate.

Health

Picardy Shepherds may develop hip dysplasia and progressive retinal atrophy in some lines. Ask breeders about hip and eye testing.
