The Plott Hound is a medium-to-large, muscular scenthound with a distinctive brindle coat, a long tail, and dropped ears. The outline is that of a cold-nosed hunting hound, built for mountain work.

A brindle hunting hound for a house with land; short coat, a loud bay, and nights meant for the woods, not thin walls.

The Plott Hound was developed in the mountains of North Carolina from Hanoverian-type hounds brought from Germany by the Plott family. It is used on bear, boar, and raccoon. It is the state dog of North Carolina. The AKC places it in the Hound Group; the UKC classes it as a Scenthound.

Color: Any shade of brindle; a black saddle is allowed; small white marks may appear

Temperament

Plotts are typically courageous on game, loyal to their hunter, and more serious than some coonhound cousins. They have a carrying voice and need more work than a short walk.

Training

Train the recall early and give the dog a hunting job. Scent drive is strong.

Care and grooming

Wipe the short coat and clean the ears after work in cover.

Shedding

Low to moderate.

Health

The breed is generally hardy. Ear infections and hip dysplasia can occur; keep working dogs fit.
