The Portuguese Cattle Dog is a medium-to-large, wolf-colored livestock guardian with a short thick coat, a strong head, and dropped or folded ears. The outline is rustic rather than massive.

A cattle-driving dog for a farm or serious yard; a short-to-medium coat, a sharp bark, and energy meant for livestock.

The Portuguese Cattle Dog, or Cao de Castro Laboreiro, is a livestock guardian from the Castro Laboreiro mountains of northern Portugal. It watched cattle and flocks against wolves. The UKC classes it as a Guardian Dog.

Temperament

This is an independent, territorial guardian. It is typically devoted to its own household and reserved with strangers. It needs space and a role.

Training

Socialize early and keep the rules quiet and firm.

Brush weekly. This mountain dog does poorly as an idle suburban pet.

Health

The breed is generally hardy. Hip dysplasia can occur; keep the dog lean.
