The Smalands Hound is a medium, rectangular scenthound with a short black-and-tan coat and, in many dogs, a naturally short tail. The ears are dropped and the outline is that of a compact Swedish foxhound.

The Smalands Hound, or Smalandsstovare, is a Swedish scenthound from the province of Smaland, used on fox and hare. A natural bobtail is part of the type. The UKC classes it as a Scenthound.

Height: Male: 18–21 inches; Female: 16½–20 inches
Weight: 33–44 pounds
Color: Black and tan; small white marks on the chest and toes are allowed
Coat: Short, harsh, and close, with a dense undercoat

Temperament

These hounds are typically friendly with their hunter and determined on a track. They have a musical voice and will follow a scent out of an unfenced yard. They need more running than a short walk.

Train the recall early and use a long line.

Care and grooming

Wipe the short coat and clean the ears after work in cover.

Moderate.

Health

The breed is generally hardy. Ear infections are the issue most often seen after field work.
