The Tibetan Mastiff is a giant livestock guardian with a massive head, a heavy mane, and a dense double coat. The tail is plumed and carried over the back. The outline is that of a mountain flock dog, not a polished show mastiff only.

The Tibetan Mastiff, or Do-Khyi, is a flock and property guardian from the Tibetan plateau. It lived with nomads against wolves and strangers. The AKC places it in the Working Group; the UKC classes it as a Guardian Dog.

Height: Male: 26 inches and up; Female: 24 inches and up
Weight: 70–150 pounds, depending on sex and line
Color: Black, brown, blue-gray, or gold, with or without tan markings
Coat: Heavy double coat, longer on the mane and tail
Lifespan: 10–14 years
Litter size: 5–12 puppies

Temperament

This is an independent, territorial guardian. It is typically devoted to its own household and reserved with strangers, especially at night. It needs space and a role, not a busy suburban sidewalk.

Training

Socialize early and keep the rules quiet and firm. The breed was selected to think for itself on the plateau.

Care and grooming

Brush the heavy coat weekly, more often when the undercoat blows. They overheat in warm climates.

Shedding

Seasonal and heavy.

Health

Tibetan Mastiffs may develop hip dysplasia, hypothyroidism, and bloat. Do not exercise hard right after meals.
